Abstract
The purpose of this study was to research the literature and develop a better understanding of how physical activity and mindfulness can affect stress levels. Research was carried out through conducting a survey, which was distributed to 111 members of Splashpoint Leisure Centre. Participants were questioned on their stress levels and their involvement in physical activity and mindfulness practices, to look for a relationship between the two. This enabled the researcher to evaluate if exercise and mindfulness can be used as an effective stress management technique.
The data that was collected was compared across gender and age categories to identify recommendations that could be given to Splashpoint, so that they can provide a service that improves their members stress levels.
Results from the literature and survey showed that exercise and mindfulness are very effective tools for reducing stress levels. Recommendations from the study are that Splashpoint should promote doing a mix of high intensity aerobics, mindfulness and weight/ strength training classes throughout the week to maximise stress reduction benefits for its members.
